While cannabis has been decriminalized in Thailand, the regulatory landscape is complex and evolving. Tourists face risks from unlicensed sellers, products with undisclosed THC levels, driving under influence enforcement, and the absolute prohibition on taking cannabis out of the country.
Warnings
Unlicensed street vendors
Many cannabis vendors operate without proper licenses, selling products that may be contaminated, mislabeled, or contain undisclosed THC levels exceeding the 0.2% limit. Purchasing from unlicensed vendors provides no legal recourse if you have adverse effects.
How to avoid: Buy only from licensed dispensaries with visible FDA registration. Ask to see the product's lab testing certificate.
Edibles dosage dangers
Cannabis edibles in Thailand are often poorly labeled with inconsistent THC content. Tourists unfamiliar with edibles frequently consume too much, leading to medical emergencies, hospitalizations, and incidents that attract police attention.
How to avoid: Start with very small doses. Buy only properly labeled products from licensed shops. Never consume edibles before driving or swimming.
DUI cannabis enforcement
Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal and police are increasing roadside testing. A cannabis DUI carries the same penalties as alcohol DUI and can result in imprisonment, license revocation, and visa complications.
How to avoid: Never drive after consuming cannabis. Use taxis, Grab, or public transport. Effects can last 4-8+ hours for edibles.
Taking cannabis home — drug trafficking
Attempting to take ANY cannabis product out of Thailand — even CBD oil that was legally purchased — constitutes drug trafficking in most countries. Airport detection is increasingly sophisticated. This is the single biggest legal risk for cannabis tourists.
How to avoid: Consume or dispose of ALL cannabis products before leaving Thailand. Do NOT pack any cannabis product in luggage.
Police extortion near dispensaries
Some reports indicate police approaching tourists near cannabis shops and demanding to see purchase receipts or claiming the shop is unlicensed. While often resolved with a 'fine,' this can escalate.
How to avoid: Keep receipts from all cannabis purchases. Patronize well-known, established dispensaries. Know the Tourist Police number: 1155.
