Vaping and e-cigarettes are 100% illegal in Thailand — this catches thousands of tourists off guard every year. Despite visible use in some tourist areas, enforcement is active and penalties are severe. There are no exceptions, no medical exemptions, and no tolerance zones.
Warnings
Bringing a vape in your luggage
Customs officers at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, and other airports actively scan luggage for vaping devices. X-ray machines flag the batteries and metal components. Even a single vape pen can result in confiscation and fines.
How to avoid: Leave all vaping devices, e-liquids, and accessories at home before traveling to Thailand. Do not pack them in carry-on OR checked luggage.
Buying vapes from street vendors
Street vendors in tourist areas (Khao San Road, Walking Street, Night Markets) openly sell vape devices. Buying and possessing them is still illegal regardless of where you bought them.
How to avoid: Do not buy vaping products in Thailand. The vendor won't face consequences — you will if caught by police.
Police spot fines without receipts
Some police officers in tourist areas demand cash fines of THB 10,000-30,000 without providing official receipts. This is technically an unofficial fine/bribe, but you're in a difficult position because the device IS illegal.
How to avoid: If stopped, ask for an official receipt and offer to pay at the police station. Note the officer's badge number. Contact Tourist Police (1155) if you feel the fine is unjust.
Zero-nicotine devices are also illegal
Many tourists assume that zero-nicotine vapes or e-liquids are legal. They are not. The ban covers ALL Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems regardless of nicotine content.
How to avoid: Do not bring any vaping device to Thailand, even if it contains no nicotine.
IQOS and heated tobacco products
Heated tobacco products like IQOS and glo are banned under the same regulations as e-cigarettes. They are not treated as regular tobacco products.
How to avoid: Leave IQOS, glo, and similar heated tobacco devices at home.
