Cannabis & Controlled Substance Traps in Thailand
Despite partial legalization, cannabis laws in Thailand remain complex and enforcement is strict — especially for foreigners.
Overview
Thailand decriminalized cannabis in 2022 but with significant restrictions. THC content above 0.2% remains controlled. Edibles, public smoking, and export are all subject to strict rules that foreigners frequently violate.
Warnings
THC content above 0.2% is still controlled
Cannabis extracts, concentrates, and products with >0.2% THC are classified as narcotics. Only approved medical products are exempt.
How to avoid: Do not buy or carry high-THC products. Stick to licensed dispensaries that can verify THC content.
Smoking in public places
While possession is decriminalized, smoking cannabis in public places is illegal and can result in fines of THB 25,000 and/or 3 months imprisonment under the Public Health Act.
How to avoid: Only consume in private residences. Never smoke near temples, schools, or in public spaces.
Export of cannabis products is illegal
Taking ANY cannabis product out of Thailand — even CBD oil — is illegal and can result in arrest at the airport.
How to avoid: Do not pack any cannabis products in your luggage. Customs checks at departure are increasingly thorough.
Driving under the influence of cannabis
Driving while impaired by cannabis is a criminal offence with the same penalties as alcohol DUI.
How to avoid: Do not drive after consuming cannabis. Use taxis or ride-hailing apps.
Prescription medication conflicts
Some common foreign medications contain controlled substances in Thailand (amphetamines, certain opioids, benzodiazepines). Cannabis use can complicate drug testing during legal situations.
How to avoid: Keep all prescription documentation. Be aware that drug tests may be required in some legal situations.
