    Overview

    The Geographical Indication Protection Act B.E. 2546 (2003) protects names identifying a product's geographical origin where origin gives the product specific quality, reputation, or characteristic. The Department of Intellectual Property registers Thai and foreign GIs. Thailand has over 130 registered GIs including Doi Tung Coffee and Sangyod Phatthalung Rice.

    Section 27 defines the prohibited (wrongful) uses of a geographical indication (misrepresenting a product's origin); Section 39 penalises them with a fine of up to THB 200,000. There is no imprisonment, and the Director-General may compound the offence (Section 43).
