How It Works
Individual advertises as a 'legal consultant' or 'lawyer' online or in expat communities
Offers significantly lower fees than licensed law firms
Takes payment upfront for legal representation or document filing
May file incorrect or incomplete documents, missing deadlines
Client discovers the practitioner is not licensed with the Lawyers Council
Work product is invalid and must be redone by a real lawyer at additional cost
Warning Signs
Cannot provide Lawyers Council registration number
Office is a residential address or co-working space
Significantly lower fees than established law firms
Requests cash payments with no receipt
Unable to appear in court on your behalf
