Deepfake Romance Scams via Dating Apps

Scammers use real-time AI video deepfakes to pass video-call 'proof of life' tests on Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, and Thai dating apps — defeating the standard 'always video-call first' anti-scam advice.

    critical risk
Target: Foreign men and women using dating apps in Thailand, including those who have been previously scam-aware and demand video calls before sending money
Estimated losses: THB 500,000 – 20,000,000+ cumulative per victim • Prevalence: Rapidly increasing since real-time deepfake software became consumer-accessible in 2024

    How It Works

    1

Scammer uses commercial real-time deepfake software (often Chinese or Russian-built) to overlay an attractive face/voice over the operator's own video feed

    2

Connects on dating apps with a profile built around AI-generated photos and a believable backstory (nurse, teacher, hotel manager in another Thai province)

    3

Conducts initial video calls — short, dim lighting, occasional 'connection issues' — that pass the victim's 'is this person real?' test

    4

Escalates to romance, then to financial requests: medical emergency for a parent, business opportunity, visa fees, plane ticket to visit

    5

Some variants integrate with the older 'pig-butchering' crypto-investment script — the deepfake partner introduces a 'profitable platform'

    Warning Signs

Video calls are always short and have visual artefacts (lighting that doesn't quite match, hand-occlusion glitches, mouth-sync slightly off)

Refuses to do unannounced video calls or 'live' tasks (e.g. 'hold up three fingers next to your ear')

Will not meet in person despite supposedly living in Thailand or a nearby country

Backstory is detailed but unverifiable — workplace cannot be found online, family members never appear

Financial request follows a credibility-building pattern of small reciprocal exchanges

    What To Do

Treat video calls as a starting point, not proof — request real-time gesture tests (hand over face briefly, turn head sideways)
Insist on an in-person meeting in a public place before any financial commitment
Reverse-image-search every profile photo (Google Images, TinEye, PimEyes)
Never send money, crypto, gift cards, or 'investments' to a romantic interest you have not met in person
If you have already sent funds, file with ECD/AMLO within 72 hours — financial intelligence units may freeze transit accounts
Preserve every chat, photo, and call log — even brief screenshots help forensic teams
