    Crypto Rug-Pull Targeting Thai-Resident Foreigners

Coordinated 'rug-pull' projects pitched in Bangkok/Phuket expat circles — token launches, NFT presales, DeFi yield platforms — collapse to zero after raising funds, with founders disappearing offshore.

    critical risk
Target: Crypto-literate expats and digital nomads in Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai; especially those active in Telegram/Discord investment groups
Estimated losses: THB 100,000 – 50,000,000+ per project; documented Thai-targeted rug-pulls have totalled hundreds of millions of baht since 2024 • Prevalence: Very high since the 2024 retail crypto resurgence; weekly reports through ECD

    How It Works

    1

A 'founder' (often presenting as a Western tech entrepreneur in Thailand) launches a meme-token, NFT collection, DeFi yield protocol, or AI-crypto hybrid project

    2

Builds hype through Bangkok expat meetups, Phuket digital-nomad events, paid influencer endorsements, and Telegram/Discord pump groups

    3

Locks 'liquidity' for a marketing-friendly period (30–90 days) and pre-mines a large founder allocation

    4

After enough retail investors enter, founders dump their tokens, remove liquidity, abandon Discord, and disappear from Thailand within 72 hours

    5

Some variants: 'audited' contract with a hidden mint function; KYC team photos generated by AI; 'partnership' announcements with real companies who deny any involvement

    Warning Signs

Anonymous or AI-generated team photos with no verifiable LinkedIn history

Promised yields of 50%+ APY (no legitimate protocol sustains this)

Aggressive in-person pitches at expat bars, co-working spaces, or 'investor dinners'

Telegram group with 90% positive sentiment and bots silencing critics

Token contract not verified on a block explorer, or contract has owner-mint or owner-pause functions

Liquidity unlock date close to the marketing peak

    What To Do

Never invest based on social proof or in-person charisma alone — read the contract or pay an auditor to read it
Verify founders via reverse image search, LinkedIn history, and on-chain history of their wallets
Treat any 'guaranteed' yield as a red flag — legitimate DeFi yields fluctuate
If you have already invested and the team is going dark: file with ECD and AMLO immediately; on-chain forensics may still recover funds if exchanges cooperate
Preserve transaction hashes, wallet addresses, Telegram screenshots, and copies of marketing materials
