    Bar/Nightclub Bill Inflation Scam

Bars inflate bills with phantom drinks, inflated prices, or undisclosed minimum charges, using intimidation to force payment.

    medium risk
Target: Male tourists in entertainment areas (Walking Street, Nana, Soi Cowboy, Bangla Road)
Estimated losses: THB 5,000 – 50,000 per incident • Prevalence: Common in entertainment districts across major tourist areas

    How It Works

    1

Customer orders drinks — prices may not be displayed

    2

Staff bring unsolicited drinks and add them to the bill

    3

'Lady drinks' (drinks for hostesses) are added without clear pricing

    4

Bill arrives with charges far exceeding what was ordered

    5

Security staff prevent departure until bill is paid in full

    Warning Signs

    No prices displayed on menu

Staff constantly suggesting drinks or bringing unrequested items

Unusually friendly attention from multiple staff members

Being taken to a 'VIP' or 'private' area

Credit card taken 'for tab' before ordering

    What To Do

    Always ask prices before ordering
Keep track of what you order
Do not hand over credit card for a 'tab'
If bill seems inflated, calmly negotiate and offer to pay for what you actually ordered
Call Tourist Police (1155) if physically prevented from leaving

    How to Report

    Tourist Police: 1155 (available 24/7)
File police report at local station
Report to Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) for venue licensing
