Foreign Driving License Conversion Checklist
Complete document checklist for converting a foreign driving license to a Thai driving license at the DLT.
Document Checklist
Passport with valid visa
Original passport — tourist visa, non-immigrant visa, or residence permit accepted
Valid foreign driving license
Must be current (not expired). International Driving Permit alone is NOT sufficient.
Certified translation of foreign license
Translated into Thai by your embassy or a certified translator
Medical certificate
Issued by a Thai clinic/hospital within last 30 days. Includes vision and color blindness test.
Residence certificate
Issued by your embassy or immigration office confirming Thai address
Recent photos (1 inch)
3 photos, white background
Work permit (if applicable)
Some DLT offices request this but it is not legally required
TM.30 receipt
Proof of address registration — some offices require this
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Going to the DLT without a residence certificate — this is the most commonly forgotten document.
Not getting the license translation certified — a simple photocopy translation is not accepted.
Using an expired foreign license — it must be current at the time of application.
Visiting on a busy day without arriving early — DLT offices operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
Assuming an International Driving Permit replaces a Thai license — IDPs are only valid for 90 days in Thailand.
Helpful Tips
Arrive at the DLT before 8:00 AM to ensure you're processed the same day.
The reaction test and color blindness test are simple — don't stress about them.
Bangkok DLT offices (Chatuchak, Bangkapi) are busiest. Consider Nonthaburi or Pathum Thani instead.
The Thai license is valid for 2 years initially, then renewable for 5 years.
Having a Thai driving license can reduce your car insurance premiums.
