    TL;DR

The SMART Visa programme, administered by the Board of Investment (BOI) in coordination with the Immigration Bureau, grants long-term (up to 4-year) stay to highly qualified foreign professionals, executives, investors, startups, and their dependants in BOI-targeted industries (S-Curve and New S-Curve sectors). SMART Visa holders enjoy work-permit exemption, simplified reporting (1-year reports instead of 90-day), and dependant work rights. Sub-categories: T (Talent — skilled professionals), I (Investor), E (Executive), S (Startup), and O (Other — family / dependants).

    Application Path

    1. Pre-qualification: target industry + role / investment + salary / capital thresholds met.
    2. Endorsement: BOI evaluates and issues endorsement letter.
    3. Visa application: Thai embassy abroad or in-country change-of-status route depending on current status.
    4. SMART Visa issued; report to BOI within 90 days of arrival.
    5. Renewal: at expiry, with continuing eligibility evidence.

    Common Mistakes

    Avoid these traps:
    • Applying for Talent (T) when the employing industry is not BOI-endorsed.
    • Underestimating documentation burden — SMART Visa requires substantially more evidence than standard Non-B.
    • Treating salary threshold as gross — net of housing and benefits matters for eligibility.
    • Letting the BOI endorsement lapse without timely renewal.
    • Missing 1-year report — though less frequent than 90-day, it is mandatory.

    FAQs

    1. Can I keep my SMART Visa if I change employers?

Talent (T) is tied to the endorsing employer / role. Change of employer requires new BOI endorsement. Some flexibility exists within the same approved industry.

    2. What if my salary drops below threshold?

Continuing eligibility requires the salary / financial threshold to be maintained. Substantial drops trigger BOI review at renewal and may end SMART status.

    3. Is SMART Visa a route to PR?

It does not directly lead to PR but the long-term stay and tax-residency it enables can contribute to PR eligibility under the points system over time.

    4. How does SMART Visa compare to LTR?

LTR (Long-Term Resident) targets a wider audience including wealthy retirees, high-income remote workers, and wealthy global citizens. SMART is industry-specific. Both share work-permit exemption and reduced reporting.

    5. Is medical insurance required?

Yes — comprehensive health insurance is a SMART Visa requirement for the holder and dependants.
