Joint Bank Account with a Thai Spouse: The Foreigner's Guide

Joint Thai bank accounts between a foreigner and a Thai spouse are widely supported but require both parties' presence at the branch, both ID documents, and an understanding of the AML, tax, and inheritance implications. This guide explains what to bring and what to expect.

    TL;DR

Major Thai banks (Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn, SCB, Krungthai, TTB) allow a foreigner and a Thai-national spouse to open a joint savings or current account in person at any branch. Both parties must attend, with passport + visa stamp for the foreigner and Thai ID card + tabian baan for the spouse, plus the marriage certificate. The account is registered under both names with either "and" (both signatures required) or "or" (either signature) operating rules. Joint accounts are subject to KYC under the AML Act B.E. 2542 (1999) and to the Revenue Code's joint-income treatment rules.

    Documents to Bring

    • Foreigner: original passport, current Thai visa stamp or extension, work permit if applicable, evidence of address (TM30 receipt or utility bill).
    • Thai spouse: Thai national ID card, tabian baan (household registration), and (in some branches) a recent income evidence.
    • Both: marriage certificate (Khor Ror 2) — translated and legalised if the marriage was registered abroad.

    Operating Rules: "And" vs "Or"

"Or" (either signature)Either signer can transact aloneDay-to-day household account

    Tax + Inheritance Notes

Under the Revenue Code, joint-account interest is allocated between spouses for personal-income tax purposes; banks file Por.Ngor.Dor.91 / 90 withholding records under both names. On death of one holder, surviving access depends on the branch's procedure and the operating rule — joint "or" accounts commonly remain operable by the survivor; "and" accounts may freeze pending probate. Foreigners with Thai-spouse joint accounts should keep their will (or Thai will) clear on succession of the joint balance.

    Common Mistakes

    • Assuming an online application is enough — every Thai bank still requires both parties in person.
    • Forgetting to bring an officially-translated foreign marriage certificate.
    • Choosing "or" operation when the goal is to safeguard funds against unilateral withdrawal.
    • Not updating beneficiary forms when the joint account is set up.

    FAQs

    1. Can I open online?

Existing-customer joint setup may be possible via app for some banks; new-customer joint opening always requires branch attendance.

    2. Does the joint account satisfy retirement-visa financial evidence?

Immigration generally requires the THB 800,000 balance to be in the foreigner's sole account for the seasoning period. A joint account is typically not accepted as standalone evidence.

    3. Are funds protected by deposit insurance?

Yes — Thailand's Deposit Protection Agency Act B.E. 2551 (2008) covers up to THB 1 million per depositor per institution; joint accounts are typically treated as one depositor.
