How to Convert Your Foreign Driving License to a Thai License

Why Convert Your Driving License?

Driving in Thailand with only an International Driving Permit (IDP) has limitations:

IDPs are only valid for specific periods

Some rental companies prefer Thai licenses

Insurance claims may be complicated without a Thai license

Thai license is valid for 2-5 years

Visa Requirements

Important: Most DLT offices require a non-tourist visa:

Non-B (Business)

Non-O (Retirement, Marriage, Dependent)

Non-ED (Education)

DTV (Destination Thailand Visa)

LTR (Long-Term Resident)

Tourist visas and visa exemptions are generally not accepted.

Documents Required

1. Foreign driving license (original)

2. Embassy certification — Letter confirming your license is genuine 3. Certified Thai translation (if license not in English) 4. Valid passport with visa (original + copies) 5. Medical certificate (within 30 days, THB 100-300) 6. Two passport photos (2x2 inches) 7. TM.30 receipt or proof of address (some offices)

The Process

Step 1: Gather Documents Allow 1-2 weeks to obtain embassy certification and translation.

Step 2: Visit DLT Office

Arrive by 7:30-8:00 AM (offices open 8:30 AM)

Bangkok offices: Chatuchak, Mo Chit, Bangkapi

Bring all original documents AND photocopies

Step 3: Submit Application

Fill out application form

Pay fee: THB 100 (car) or THB 100 (motorcycle)

Step 4: Pass Tests

Colour blindness test

Reaction time test

No written or driving test for conversions

Step 5: Receive License

Photo taken on-site

License issued same day

Valid for 2 years (5 years on renewal)
